LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMME FOR ADOLESCENTS

This program currently operates in six semi-urban villages in the Badarpur area of New Delhi.

Objective of the program

To motivate the adolescents to realise their potential and harness it, so that they  are able to contribute positively and effectively to their family and community.

Components of the program

(I) Honing/Developing Vocational Skills

The Independent Centres in the villages, run by the alumni of the program, impart training in cutting and tailoring, and beauty culture. These Centres also provide short term training to girls in candle making, block printing, food processing, mehndi application etc.

These vocations have an established market demand and in most of the cases ensure livelihood to girls who successfully graduate from the program.

The alumni of this program are also closely associated with its functioning through the actively operating Alumni Clubs.

Recent Developments

The Field activities especially related to this project has been restructured this year in an effort to make the program further sustainable. Moreover, to ensure consistency, credibility and quality girls who run the Centres were made to undertake an external evaluation of their skills by a government run institution- ‘Jan Shiksha Sansthan’ run under the aegis of the Ministry of HRD. Nearly 25 girls undertook this Evaluation, where their skills as well as their facilitation skills were tested.

This resulted in a reduction in the number of centres which are currently operational as compared to the previous years.

Without much supervision from the office side, all the centres are running very well and more and more girls are trying to start their own centres, thus moving towards an economically independent and self-esteemed future.

(II) Life Skills Education and Personality Development

Life skills like awareness about health issues, gender etc, continue to be imparted along with vocational training in these centres as PRERANA believes that well-informed girls form the basis of a healthy and happy family and thus focuses on initiating activities based on awareness and empowerment.
